Racetech Harnessing Ltd. opts to use LED components from Osram Opto Semiconductors in racing car headlights

Racetech Harnessing Ltd., a manufacturer of electrical systems for professional motor racing, equipped its new headlight generation with Osram Ostar Headlamp Pro LEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors. Efficiency losses are exceedingly low in these LEDs, even at high currents, and their surfaces emit light very homogeneously – a particularly important aspect for headlights in motor racing. These latest generation of LED components was on the road in racing car headlights for example at the legendary 2013 "24 hours of Le Mans" fitted to the Zytek Z11SN LMP2 cars.

The new headlights with Osram LEDs not only extend Racetech's innovative product range in the LED motor racing headlight sector, but is also ousting previous lighting systems thanks to its optimized product features: compared to conventional lighting systems, the small light-emitting diodes can better withstand the vibrations occurring during driving, and their small size allows them to be installed in a compact, light-weight housing. What's more, the LEDs have a long service life, making for reliable safety in endurance races.

Light cone of over 300 metres

The racing cars are each equipped with four headlights, each of which is in turn fitted with precisely aligned light-emitting diodes. Osram Ostar Headlamp Pro LEDs with the latest UX:3 chip are used in the headlights and these couple to various lenses developed by Racetech which then illuminate the race track over a length of 300 metres and a width of up to 30 metres depending on LED-Lens combination.

"We've made a significant leap forwards with the new generation of headlights fitted with LEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors. Thanks to the increased efficiency of the Osram LEDs and their low thermal resistance, we've been able to greatly enhance our products, vastly improving on the quality of the headlight systems used in the past," says John Truman, Managing Director of Racetech Harnessing Ltd. "Furthermore we are constantly looking to develop newer systems as this technology evolves, one example being our new for 2014 prototype Long range Motorsport spotlight which was tested recently at our Local Donington Park race track - utilising another Osram "UX:3 chip" based LED coupled to our narrow angle Lens we were able to produce an excellent narrow angle high intensity beam extending to 500 Metres with a significant reduction in input power!"

Three partners, one successful headlight system

The headlight system developed by Racetech in the last few years is based on metal-backed PCB technology with a metal-core circuit board from DK Thermal Ltd. "It makes us very proud to see that the LED we developed for use on the road has now also found its way into motor racing. After all, endurance races make very tough demands, not only on the drivers, but on the components, too," emphasises Juliana Baron, LED Marketing Automotive at Osram Opto Semiconductors.

The Osram Ostar Headlamp Pro LED is fitted with the latest generation of thin-film chips, based on the UX:3 technology developed by Osram Opto Semiconductors. The LEDs are available with two to five identical chips, each of which delivers a typical 280 lm at a current of 1 ampere (A). This produces light packages of different brightnesses, but with identical connections - from approx. 500 lm to more than 1,250 lm.
