The super-bright OSTAR from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has the potential to be used for more than just general lighting, as the specialists in diving lights mb-sub and TillyTec have quickly discovered. They needed very little development time to launch two diving lights that put all other models firmly in the shade, as they demonstrated in diving hall three at the Düsseldorf boat show.

A night-time dive or a dive down to an old wreck can yield some fascinating sights – provided you have the correct equipment. Apart from the usual diving gear, a powerful light source with a long operating time is essential. The strong light in the new diving lights comes from OSRAM’s award-winning high-power OSTAR LED. It is used together with a high-performance battery in two models of different designs and will impress even seasoned divers.

Two models that are taking the diving world by storm
The perfect diving light is small, handy, extremely bright and easy to take on trips. Both of these new diving lamps meet all these criteria. mb-sub has developed the “Photon” light with OSTAR at its heart. A special reflector focuses the light so the Photon has a beam characteristic of 10°. This unit, measuring just 185 mm long and with a grip diameter of 45 mm, offers a color temperature that closely matches that of natural daylight (6000 to 6500 K) and a brightness comparable with that of a 50 W halogen lamp to cast far-reaching magical light into the underwater world either at night or a great depths during the day.

TillyTec has taken a different approach. This diving light specialist has incorporated the OSTAR as the light source in its new “LED 1000” model and also included a new LED lamp head in its existing range. These new lamp heads are available as modules for all existing 12 V halogen lamp heads. By replacing the burner and reflector for the OSTAR module and its reflector any old halogen lamp can be upgraded into a new “tuned” high-tech model. The replaceable reflector used here can be focused using the adjusting ring to suit different situations. While the output easily matches that of large HID lamps, power consumption is extremely modes at 22 W.

Divers need not fear being left in the dark. Like all LEDs, the OSTAR is extremely durable, highly efficient at 70-80 lm/W and will burn for more than 50,000 hours.
