Colour concept integrates Ice Blue LED
Ice Blue is the new corporate colour of the American Ford Motor Company and will feature in the future interior design concept of Ford vehicles in the USA. The implementation will continue the successful collaboration between Ford and OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc.
"We are excited to be involved in Ford's efforts to further harmonise the interiors of their vehicles, " explained Tom Shottes, CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, Inc., USA, on the occasion of the collaboration with the automotive manufacturer in the implementation of the modernised interior design concept. "With the advancements in LED technology, we are confident that this lighting will make positive styling and functionality statements for the brand and its customers."
OSRAM is a partner in the implementation of the Ford interior design. Over the next three model years, the blue hue will be a characteristic feature of the interior lighting concept for the 2007 Focus, the 2007 Escape and the 2008 F series - along with the design of a model yet to be introduced. Ice Blue will be incorporated in the new brand concept in different forms and further harmonise the interior of the Ford vehicles. Thus, for example, the colour will be used for the backlighting of the instrumentation, radios, climate control and switches.
The extraordinary corporate colour is made possible by the highly developed Colour on Demand technology for which OSRAM received the prestigious Detroit Innovation Award PACE in 2006. Through the process of luminescence conversion, these LEDs can generate light of any combination colour and nuance. For this, a blue chip in the LED is combined with red, yellow and green phosphor found evenly distributed in the sealing material. Changing the appropriate phosphor fractions makes it possible to mix any colour. Automotive manufacturers thus have the possibility of using their corporate colour specifically in their interior lighting concept and thus to stand out from the competition.
A further foretaste of future automotive lighting was given to visitors at the North American International Autoshow (NAIAS) by introducing the concept study on the new Lincoln MKR: around 300 LEDs from OSRAM are used for almost the entire interior and exterior lighting. Inside, Golden DRAGON LEDs and Power TOPLEDs from OSRAM light up the ceiling, centre console, doors and instrumentation, while outside, Power TOPLEDs are fitted for the front indicators and in the combined rear lamp unit.
In automotive lighting, LEDs are a convincing solution due to their flexibility of use, their high energy efficiency, the almost unlimited choice of colours, and their long life. The collaboration between OSRAM and Ford in automotive lighting has now been a tradition for decades: projects include the development of the striking corporate green interior lighting in the late 1990s and the more sophisticated white cockpit design with satin nickel accents for the Lincoln Navigator, which won OSRAM a 2002 PACE finalist award.
