Osram Opto Semiconductors launches a visible red laser
Osram Opto Semiconductors has added laser light sources in the visible range to its product portfolio. The first of these products to hit the semiconductor market is the SPL CG65. It emits red laser light with a wavelength of 650 nm and combines high quality with an attractive price. In addition to professional medical applications this laser is ideal as a source of radiation for the soft laser and consumer sectors.
The red laser is designed for cw (continuous wave) operation with a lateral stripe width of 100 µm and an optical output of 500 mW. At an ambient temperature of 20°C its typical lifespan is more than 4000 hours. This is four times the minimum requirement for medical applications of 1000 hours. Cooling is provided by a small copper heat sink.
This efficient source of radiation is ideal for professional medical applications, such as photodynamic cancer therapy and ophthalmology. In cancer therapy the laser's wavelength of 650 nm is effective in combination with a particular drug.
In soft laser equipment it is perfect for laser therapy and bio-stimulation. The radiation can have a regenerative effect for self-healing and reduce pain and swellings, such as sports injuries.
To produce the red laser Osram Opto Semiconductors is using the tried and trusted material combination of indium gallium aluminium phosphide which has been so successful in LED manufacture. It is fabricated on 4" wafers in the world's most advanced optical chip factory in Regensburg. The result is a high chip yield, combined with an attractive price for the end product.
