OSRAM adds to its CERAMOS product range

For applications that call for high power density in small spaces it is well worthwhile giving ceramic components from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors a try. The benefits include long life, extra low profile, high output and an extremely small connection surface. These make them ideal for low-profile display backlighting and flash photography applications. If you want to see for yourself just order our CERAMOS demo board.

They are something special, these small LEDs – less than 1 mm high yet extremely powerful, producing from 30 to more than 100 lm (white). For flash photography applications there is also the design aspect. With their diffused encapsulation these LEDs appear radiant white even when not lit up and can also be used as design elements. And of course they are also available with the usual clear encapsulation.

LCD displays in particular place high demands on the light sources used for backlighting.In addition to high output and appropriate emission characteristics, the light sources need to be extremely durable, in other words they must have a life of at least 50,000 hours. Other requirements include reliable thermal management and low-profile design. With the CERAMOS Reflector and the Multi CERAMOS, OSRAM now offers two new ceramic LEDs that are perfect for meeting the requirements of LCD backlighting applications:

  • The extremely compact white CERAMOS Reflector is manufactured with the latest ThinGaN chip technology and offers high optical efficiency of 70 lm/W from an operating current of 80 mA. It measures just 3.25 x 2.35 x 0.85 mm, lasts more than 50,000 hours and is unaffected by temperatures as high as 150°C. The small oval opening enables light to be injected into thin light guides only 2 mm high. The LED is also suitable for direct backlighting. Thanks to the low-profile design, both applications are in keeping with the latest trend for slimmer and slimmer displays with high brightness. Possible applications include built-in vehicle LCD displays of average size (approx. 10”) that need to be read in bright ambient light, e.g. satnav devices and entertainment systems. Desktop monitors (17-27“) will also benefit from these new small LEDs.
  • Multi CERAMOS is a compact and particularly bright RGB LED measuring 4.5 x 3.1 x 0.95 mm. The latest ThinGaN and thin-film chip technology guarantee high optical efficiency: 39 lm/W in red, 45 lm/W in ’true green’ and 15 lm/W in blue. The three chips occupy a very small area so the spacing for the white mix remains small and the complete component has an extremely low profile. This means that displays can be made very thin. Applications include displays with direct backlighting and displays in which the light is injected at the side. The linear chip arrangement and the special encapsulation ensure a constant color impression across the entire viewing angle. Multi CERAMOS is therefore suitable for LCDs that need a high color gamut (130% NTSC) and absolute color fidelity, such as professional or medical displays.

The components are resistant to shocks and vibrations of course and are suitable for standard solder processes. Check out the properties and possibilities of our CERAMOS family. The demo board contains a broad spectrum of ceramic LEDs on a single board and can be used straight away.
