A prototype of a backlighting system with Golden DRAGON LEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors measures an impressive 82 inches. It will be presented at the SID (Society for Information Display), which will be taking place in Boston from May 24 to 26. This model is the size of a door and is the largest LED backlighting system ever completed for an LCD display. The backlighting system has a depth of just 40 mm, produces 10,000 cd/m² and has a life span of 50,000 hours. Its power consumption is 1000 W.

The system is freely scalable and based on the Golden DRAGON, a LED of the latest generation which is equipped with an additional lens. To make the best possible use of the available space behind the display and achieve uniform illumination with optimum colour mixing, a total of 1120 LEDs are used in clusters of four. Each of these clusters include two green, one blue and one red chip, all fabricated in thin-film technology. This technology produces much more effective chips than conventional methods as these "top-lookers" emit almost all their light upwards. This means that the light can be better injected into external optics. The wavelengths have been slightly changed (green 527 nm, blue 458 nm and red 625 nm), which increases the colour gamut by more than 50% compared with conventional cold cathode fluorescence lamps or existing LED solutions. This backlighting system therefore even exceeds the requirements of the National Television System Committee (NTSC).

This model is the first to include a new OSRAM Optotronic driver specifically for displays and is capable of handling a maximum output of 1500 W.

Displays backlit with LEDs do not require fans, do not contain any lead or mercury and therefore comply with the RoHS directive (RoHS: Restriction of Hazardous Substances). They are vibration-proof and shockproof and have short switching times of less than 100 ns. The pulse mode of the light emitting diodes improves the presentation of moving images and allows for infinite dimming.
