Thinfilm chips emit their light exclusively through the top side. From there it is emitted in all directions. However, only light emitted vertically upwards is really useful in projection applications. The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering developed a new class of optical elements, which collect the radiating light and focus it in the direction it is needed. The light can therefore be directed out at an angle specific to the application. The secondary optics then distributes the light to produce the desired intensity profile.
