OSRAM Opto Semiconductors was the first company to develop a manufacturing process in which a metal layer is integrated into the interior of the LED. This so-called "mirror" reflects the light to the top side from where it is emitted with no loss of brightness. This process is called "Thinfilm technology".

The development project started in 1999 and the first commercial product was released into the market in 2002. Ever since, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has become known as the manufacturer of the world's most efficient red and yellow LEDs. Blue Thinfilm – or ThinGaN – LEDs were released soon afterwards and thereby provided the basis for producing white light. Our Thinfilm technology is now used in all standard material systems – from infrared light to light in all colors of the rainbow.
