A day in the life

Thorsten Kunz

Thorsten KunzHello! I'm Thorsten Kunz, 27 years old and single. I graduated from the Technical University in Karlsruhe with an engineering diploma in electrotechnology and information technology.

So how did I end up at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors? There was a recruitment event at the Lighting Technology Institute at the University of Karlsruhe as part of a lighting technology convention. It featured companies from optoelectronics sector. OSRAM Opto Semiconductors was also represented there and I started talking with their applications engineer who offered me a practical work experience placement in Shanghai. I accepted the offer the very next day and spent half a year in China in their applications department. Later, while I was doing my final year project on locally dimmable background lighting for flat screens, I applied for a vacant position with the company. I was lucky enough to get the job and have been working for OSRAM Opto Semiconductors as an application engineer since 1 October 2007.

I am involved in building prototypes and future models for LCD monitors and TVs and study a variety of questions, such as: How much electricity do you need to operate the LED? How bright must the TV be? I also provide support for customers when they have design problems with LED systems. My specialist area is the design of backlighting for flat screen monitors or LCD TVs.

At OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, I really like the positive working atmosphere and the very wide range of tasks and responsibilities we are entrusted with. It is extremely exciting that the company's core product, the LED, is currently revolutionising every area that involves generating artificial light.

Apply right now if you, too, are interested in the future of light!

Yours Thorsten Kunz
