HBO lamps are short arc lamps in which the discharge arc fires in an atmosphere of mercury vapor under high pressure. Since HBO lamps give off a great deal of ultraviolet radiation, they are almost exclusively employed in technical-scientific applications, e.g. fluorescent microscopy, hardening of adhesives, or in material testing. HBO lamps are available in performances between 50 and 200W. The HBO R 103W is specially intended for light conducting applications. It possesses an elliptic reflector which enables the direct coupling of the light in a conductor.
